San Francisco 49er Early Team History
The San Francisco 49ers began playing in the inaugural All-American Football Conference in 1944. It was then the All-American Football Conference was a rival of the National Football League. The name 49ers was chosen to symbolize the forty-niners from the California gold rush in 1849. Buck Shaw, who led Santa Clara University to national prominence, was the coach. Tony Marobito, the owner, chose the players with bay area ties. The 49ers moved to the National Football League in 1950 after the AAFC collapsed. Tony Marobito suffered a heart attack before the 49ers won the NFL title. Victor, Tony’s brother, continued as the owner until he died of a heart attack in 1964. The wives of Victor and Tony Marobito gained control of the team and hired Lou Spadia as team president. In the early 1970’s, the 49ers won 3 NFC Western Division titles and moved their home field from Kezar Stadium to Candlestick Park, their current home field. At the end of March, 1977, Edward J. Debartolo Jr. became the team owner. Soon afterward, Joe Montana and Dwight Clark joined the San Francisco 49ers. Joe Montana was named MVP and set super Bowl records for passing and rushing by a quarterback. Jerry Rice was chosen in the draft for the season of 1985. However, Jerry Rice was not the team’s focus during that season. Instead Roger Craig was the team’s focus. Montana became the team’s quarterback until he was injured and replaced by Steve Young. Young became well known for his running and passing. During the season of 1991, Montana was on injured reserve. The 49ers did not make the playoffs that season. Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs and Young became the undisputed starter. Young led again in passing. During 1993, as a team the 49ers led the league in scoring and total offense.
